Planting a new lawn from sod

At OutdoorTasks.com we know all about sod and planting a new lawn. Here are some tips:

  1. Choose a 100% sand base sod. This type of sod is excellent for yard drainage.
  2. Choose a sod grown without plastic netting. Plastic netting is absolute no go as far as we are concerned.
  3. Water the sod as you are installing it. If you visit our instagram page, looking for the post about sod. We detail what dried out sod that must be replaced looks like. This is totally preventable.
  4. Use a root starter fertilizer. Sod that has just been harvested has had the root system practically removed. We need to help those little roots get a foot hold again. This step should not be missed.
  5. Never buy sod from a big box store. Sod must be fresh and harvested when the ground is cool. If any heat builds up in the rolls, it begins to compost.
  6. Lay sod as soon as it’s received. In some cases when the temperatures are cool you can leave it rolled up for a bit, but it’s best to be safe and install the sod without delay.

When should I plant a new lawn?

Sodding a new lawn can be done in any season. The exclusion is when the ground is frozen. The best time to plant sod is when the weather is warm and wet, this normally occurs in spring and fall. In winter you can definitely plant sod and sometimes it’s a good idea to cover the bare area with sod before weeds infest. Here are some tips for planting sod in the winter:

  • Sod will remain dormant and start growing once the temperature rises to 10 degrees Celsius.
  • Frost does not damage sod.
  • Never walk on frost covered sod.
  • You will need to water after sod defrosts if it doesn’t rain as ice dehydrates the sod during winter.
